Why I kinda dig 1963.

As per usual, the United States of America is in an uproar this morning. Last night Ellen Degeneres officially replaced Paul Abdul on American Idol and we as a country didn't know how to deal with having our favorite incoherent washed up pop star replaced by our favorite lesbian on our favorite karaoke show, so we lashed out. We lashed out and yelled things at the President.
I'm not sure how I feel about Joe Wilson's now infamous "YOU LIE!" outburst [Though I did love Nancy Pelosi's "Bitch, oh no you didn't!" stare], mainly because they are always yelling at each other like this in the British Parliament and I find it rather charming. But that's what revolutions are for and we can't act British any more, so I guess hey, your bad Joe Wilson.
The true point of the matter is, this week has already been a little crazy aside from Ellen and Joe - our President was also giving scandalous speeches to our nation's youth, a crazy guy was trying to hijack a plane in Mexico and it was Labor Day so no one wanted this week to go past Monday anyway. People were already freaked out about last night's health care speech because - wait for it! - it was going to be shown on every single channel! Well, except for on Fox, which obviously couldn't bring itself to not show another episode of So You Think You Can Dance, which is curious because I thought that show just freakin' ended.
Therefore Fox should clearly be commended for its defiance for a] picking Ellen despite her lack of apparent musical knowledge and for b] ignoring the President's request for airtime because really, how dare he want to address the nation about something vaguely more important than a reality competition show.
Now before I go any further, if you haven't noticed, I love me some Barack Obama. Not really just because of politics, but I do love the man himself - in that I think we could probably hang out, have a beer and discuss our mutual love of Abraham Lincoln's word choices together sort of way. So needless to say, I wouldn't be the first person to complain if I had to watch those adorable large ears on every single channel. But I think this TV Station Uproar would be unfounded no matter who was president, even if it was someone who's large ears I found gumpy, not adorable [cough GWB cough].
But let us stop the panic and think about this for a hot second America: Is it really so terrible for our President to command our airwaves for an hour on a Wednesday night?
Because I'm an East Coast Liberal Elitist, who watches shows like this, I'm going to answer my own question using an episode of Mad Men. To me the most striking moment in last week's episode was when little Sally Draper, trying to escape the horror of her beloved Grandfather's death was relegated by her mother to watching TV, only to see on the screen the horror of the precursors to the Vietnam War in the form of a monk immolating himself on the street. Today Brian Williams would warn us four times before such an image was shown on the nightly news, if at all, but here was Sally watching wide eyed a person's real life suicide.
Mad Men is of course not real life, but the moment was so striking because it called into sharp relief the fact that in 1963, really what else could Sally watch? If she changed the station [which she could only do a few times], the chances were good she would see the same news on every channel - a fact made plain as the episode's story shifts from household to household and the same newscast in heard in the background. There was no Disney Channel or Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon to take little Sally's mind off grief and death, instead her television merely served as a reminder that death was happening all the time, and all over the world:

What is so strange then is that some of the people who panicked at Obama's speech last night seem to overlap with some of the people who are forever advocating a "return" to values, implying by asking for a "return" that values are something we had and then lost. It's as if 1963 has some sort of inherent morality simply because it was "back then" and is now clouded with the rosy glow of nostalgia - but in 1963 monks were setting themselves on fire in protest, our president was getting his brains shot out and the bulk of the Civil Rights Movement was just something vague on the horizon. Credentials don't matter at all on Blogger, but the biggest thing I learned from earning a degree in history is that the world has always been pretty fucked up, and we're not going to get back to better times because there really were never any good times in the first place. Nevertheless if there's one place I wouldn't mind seeing a return to 1963, it's on our television screens.
Today TV is all about choice - what 24 hour news network do you watch? FOX? MSNBC? CNN? Do you pay for basic cable? Or premium? Isn't there a premium-premium where you get everything? Not satisfied with what the stations are playing right now? No bother, just order something off Pay Per View!
If the moon landing were tonight, how many people would get bored listening to Anderson Cooper and switch over to Bravo instead? As hard as the Jonas Brothers try, they'll never be as famous as the Beatles - they are too easy to tune out, to flip over when they are on TV, to not be heard when we can listen to our personalized radio stations on XM or Pandora. Everyone knew the Beatles, and everyone watched them on Ed Sullivan [famously, people even put off pulling crimes to watch!] but can you tell me who is on Dave Letterman tonight?
These choices have been good for us as individuals, but not necessarily for us as a nation. Lately all we've been doing is yelling at each other [literally, which is scary] at town halls and even now in Congress, so maybe its time we shared a bit more. When he came to the United States in the 1830s Alexis de Tocqueville wrote that it was governed by the "tyranny of the majority," which is probably a bad thing, but after all these centuries also probably the only thing holding a country as large and diverse as ours together.
With our vast array of choices we tend to forget that television's true strength is that it can be a shared experience, a medium capable of being everywhere at once, from sea to shining sea. So let's all watch the President together and let's all watch Ellen's first night on American Idol, and then we can all have something to talk about the next day at work. And then maybe we won't feel the need to yell at each other because hey, even though that lady you met at the town hall from Arkansas doesn't want universal health care like you do, she thought Ellen sucked at her new job too, so maybe you two do have more in common than you realized.
This isn't to say that Americans didn't hate each other even when our television choices were limited [um, hello HUAC!] or even before television when the thought of fighting a war against each other on our own soil was not only conceivable, but totally real. But like I said I love Lincoln, so to paraphrase the man in the stovepipe hat, our "mystic chords of memory" seem to be growing more and more tenuous and it's time we found a little bit of common ground America, even if the only thing we share is our mutual annoyance that So You Think You Can Dance has been preempted for yet another damn speech.

I have found the new Tom Brokaw.

This video is so great - Damon Weaver is a better journalist than a) half the people on TV right now and b) anybody who worked at the university newspaper with me back in the day. Some of his questions are hard son! This kid has straight up guts to tell the President to his face that all school lunches should consist of "french fries and mangoes," which let's be honest, would be AWESOME.
Damon also asks the President to "be his homeboy" after he tells him that "After I interviewed Vice President Biden, he became my homeboy." This kid is clearly a boss, as he is in elementary school and has already interviewed the President, Vice President, and according to his YouTube, Oprah. Dave Letterman is STILL complaining that Oprah won't come on his show, so you go Damon.
People have been falling over themselves to describe and analyze Barack Obama, but has anyone been as concise as Damon's final conclusion that "He's very tall and nice"? When is Damon's book coming out? Or maybe Nickelodeon needs a news anchor?

A Barack fanblog! With pictures! Because I've never posted that before!

I love Barack Obama like a 14 year old girl loves Joe Jonas so when the White House released a 291 - two hundred ninety and freakin' one! - photo slideshow of the administration's first 100 days on flickr, watching it was my equivalent of watching that 3-D Jonas Brothers movie [that happened right?].

So a selection of the best of Barack and co. [and also, a cheese plate]:

I love that it looks like Malia is photographing her dad about to go to prom. That girl must have some killer scrapbooks.

Who wouldn't want this badass to be President?!

Geez Michelle, why don't you wear a dress I don't like on occassion?!

The phones in the Oval Office even have a presidential seal? Ridiculous.

Or awesome.

Check it bitches.
Made in the USA.

Fuck you Ansel Adams. This is the best photo ever taken.

If this was an episode of 24, the person who placed this marker would actually be in cahoots with terrorists, and would be setting a marker for a gunman. And Jack Bauer would have to headbutt the president to the ground to save the day.

Meta picture #1!

Meta picture #2! Michelle on a magazine cover!

A cheese plate. A fucking cheese plate. You would think the White House could afford better crackers than those ubiquitous butterfly shaped ones - I can buy those at my corner store.

How baller is Air Force One?!

Buy a fucking table cloth. It's the White House.

Michrack? Barelle?
Wow, those both suck.

Best. Video. Ever?

There's no question that the cutest thing in the world is baby ducks, followed closely only by Barack Obama's big ears. [And then puppies.]
CNN has posted this inexplicable video of ducklings on the White House lawn - there is no context as to why there are indeed ducks on the White House lawn, and no sound, so.....wtf?
But let's not complain, and take comfort in the fact that in a world full of death, sorrow, and evil swines, the three most adorable things in the world were in close proximity to each other for all too short a time:

Last post about a dog. I promise!

It looks like all the paparazzi have migrated to DC to photograph Bo the First Dog today and ask Michelle and Barack necessary questions like "Is he neutered?" and "Has he had an accident yet?" or the ever insightful "Where does he sleep?" Awesome, the entire world is as obsessed with this dog as I am [which probably confirms that our world is in a slow, but steady, state of decline].
But then again, what are Heidi and Spencer doing with themselves today since all the paparazzi abandoned them for the White House lawn? On second thought maybe this dog isn't as bad for the world as I thought:

I think what really needs to happen is that I need to just adopt a damn dog myself.

Yay/Nay.

Yay:

David Cook's Grammatical Prowess.

Reading Perez today, apparently David Cook is all hot and bothered that he is being stalked by crazed women who show up at his hotel room, which I completely understand. I once drunkenly gave the wrong guy my phone number and he proceeded to call me the next day about six times all before I got out of work. Not the same, you say? Probably not. Perez says posting a MySpace blog asking to stop the stalking is a douche move [pot calling the kettle black, no?], but considering even I have mentioned David several times on this blog by the virtue of his handsome head of hair and Mariah Carey covering abilities alone, I believe there are probably some severe crazies out there. But regardless of the ethics of such a blog posting, I was most struck by the fact that said post was surprisingly well written for a "celebrity blog." No "lolspeak"! [Which I use, so...whatevs] The phrase "but in contrast"! Words as complex as "muster" and "condemn!" Entire sentences! Periods! Commas! Behold:

Hey everyone,
First off, I want to say thank you to everyone who has been coming out to the shows since my last post. The vibe at these shows has been amazing.

Secondly, I have to address some behavior that has become disturbing. We pride ourselves on being accessible to you as fans, but in contrast, we do enjoy what little privacy we can muster. To that end, the efforts by some fans to find our hotel rooms, call our hotel rooms, attach things to our bus, etc., is something I have to condemn. This relationship only works when it remains healthy for both parties, and should this behavior continue, the only thing we can do is take more preventative measures to maintain our privacy, which in turn makes us less accessible to you.

I hope this doesn't come off as harsh. I merely want to nip this in the bud so we can continue to have a great experience with all of you at the shows we have coming up. Take care and see you at the next show.

~D
If the base line for celebrity blogs is Courtney Love and Lindsey Lohan, this blog is basically the War and Peace of celebrity blogs. Which makes me feel a] that David might not actually have written it or b] if he did write it, I really like you now David and maybe I'll show up at your hotel room. We can play Scramble on Facebook for hours, and then make googly eyes to each other while we read Strunk and White's The Elements of Style.
Though you might not want to be so hasty David because according to your MySpace you are playing a show at the Allegan, MI County Fair and it does not bode well for your career that even though I spent the first 22 years of my life in Michigan I have no clue where Allegan County is. So, alas, I have no idea where to appear with my pink and glittery sign that says "I LUV UR GRAMMAR SKILLZ."
[Oh, Google Maps tells me Allegan County is on the west side of the state - the side I ignore, because it gave us Dick DeVos].

Barack watches Gossip Girl!

Barack redeemed himself in my eyes for his Special Olympics gaffe [which let's be honest, probably won't get shoes thrown at you] by mentioning Gossip Girl during a town hall meeting in California. As quoted by New York Magazine:

"Is he on, like, Gossip Girl or something?" —President Obama reacting to the boisterous applause mysteriously awarded to one questioner at a town hall in Los Angeles today
Nothing would make me happier than to know that Barack actually secretly watches GG every Monday night, but I am sure things like leading the free world might get in the way. Maybe he TiVos. At the very least, let's talk guest appearances Barack - Nate is apparently about to get into politics! Perfect!
Also, that is how Barack looked during his own Gossip Girl days ^

Allen Ginsberg Mania!

There is nothing I love more than bald gay men with plastic glasses [that is a lie], but I do love Allen - lines from Howl are in the running for the tattoo I will get when I have money to spend on such frivolous things. And now apparently, there is not one but two - two! - movies in the works about Allen, one starring James Franco and the other starring some random unknown. The one starring James Franco probably has a better chance, considering it also stars John Hamm, Jeff Daniels, Mary Louise-Parker, and David Strathairn. The one with the random also stars some guy from Fantastic Four as Jack Kerouac [ummm.....what?], but also has Ben Whishaw, who was pretty good in I'm Not There.
Speaking of I'm Not There, is it even worth it to make two Allen Ginsberg movies when David Cross and Cate Blanchett already nailed this scene?:

Nay:

The End of Team Juliet?!

At the moment, Juliet is basically the best character on Lost - she is not annoying like Kate, she has proven herself to be kind of a badass [gun fights during canoe chases! delivering babies on the spot in 1977! a Dharma mechanic!], and most importantly, she managed to snag Sawyer for herself and I don't hate her for it. In fact, they make a pretty adorable couple. So please, please, Elizabeth Mitchell do not leave Lost!!! I have never heard of this TV pilot you have been cast in - maybe just as guest! please! - but if you have to leave, please do not leave without giving Karen and I the Juliet/Kate smackdown we having been wanting. Of course, if we had our way you would win this smackdown, hands down. Kate may be an ex-con, but Juliet conned all the castaways into trusting her back in the day - and has proven that she's actually worth trusting. That is, unless this entire thing is a ruse spanning thirty years - and if that's the case, you can go Juliet.

Watchmen

I give you props off the bat for one thing Watchmen - your soundtrack included not one, but three Bob Dylan songs. [Well, two were covers, but still] The bad thing? Did we really need to see someone get his arms sawed off Zack Snyder?! The worst thing? Silk Spectre telling the nuclear Dr. Manhattan that licking him was "like licking a battery." I understand that line isn't in the book, so pay attention to this eye roll. Oh, brother. The worst worst thing? The slow motion CGI-looking sex scene in a flying owl-shaped airplane thing set to Leonard Cohen's original Hallelujah. Maybe that's just because Leonard Cohen kind of creeps me out.
But to be fair, the movie made me want to read the book, because you could tell the movie was trying too hard to live up to something it couldn't. Plus, unlike the movie I hear the book contains a giant fake alien squid, so really, why wouldn't I want to read that?

The best part of the movie was its visual style, and all the best parts are in the trailer [of course]. Plus, stay tuned to the special surprise at the end of the video:

Yay/ Nay.

Yay:

Inauguration Day.

Look, I don't really know anything about politics but I know that I freakin' love Barack Obama - probably for all the wrong reasons actually, but I don't even care. He makes me feel all hopey [that's an acceptable word now, btw] and his adorable ears send my heart into patriotic palpitations. If you will note, we now have a badass for president:

And as if that weren't enough we have Sasha and Malia, who let's be honest, are hella cute. I especially loved that Malia had her digital camera out and was filming her dad give a speech only 43 other people in the world have given. AOL is annoying and won't let me c/p this adorable picture of Malia taking a picture of her dad posing in his tux about to head out to the inaugural balls - lame! When that girl gets to be old enough, can you imagine her Facebook page?! Maybe she has one already, kids these days grow up so fast. If she already has one, I am sure she has a photo album called "My Daddy's Inauguration." I have one called "HAPPY HALLOWEEN BITCHES." We clearly lead different lives. They also dress way better than me:

Inauguration was so much fun in fact that I didn't even really mind this - In fact I kind of liked that um, hat, considering it's from Mr. Song's Millinery which I go past all the time. Way to rep the D Aretha.

Skins.

There is a delicate balance to the way the world works and it goes like this - England makes something cool, and like a year and half later we finally realize it and steal it. The Beatles. Led Zeppelin. Arctic Monkeys. Our country. You know. I wasted a lot of my Christmas break watching this show on YouTube and its basically like Gossip Girl but better - because its England they can actually swear! Yay! It's been on for like two years already, but course us Yanks are just getting hip to it. I'm sure Dev Patel's new found success is helping, even though he's not on the show anymore - but he's still pretty hillarious as Anwar, the Muslim boy whose best friend is a gay dancer, and who is dating his best friend's stalker, and who lost his virginity to a girl named Anka who he helped escape from her abusive husband while he was on a field trip in Russia [Really, I didn't make any of that up]. But actually the only inducement you need to watch this show is the knowledge that its second season finale featured a car chase involving two high school boys and a stolen coffin and the sweet strains of Britney's "Oops...I Did It Again" playing in the background. Also, they staged a school play called Osama! The Musical. Pure gold.

This clip is weirdly sweet, even though I don't know what the fuck is up with the girl's hair, and both their necklaces are hideous:

Nay:

I Will Be - Leona Lewis

My little brother has this theory that things that taste good, taste good together. I only half agree with this theory as sometimes its true - its the reason Reese's Peanut Butter Cups were invented - but on the other hand, I like Kung Pow chicken and I like lasagna but I don't really want Kung Pow chicken lasagna. This music video then is like Kung Pow chicken lasagna - I like Leona Lewis, and I find Chace Crawford uncommonly pretty. So in theory, Leona + Chace = good. Right? Except...its not good. All it proves is that Leona should never act, Chace can't act and wandering around a parking garage doesn't really make for a compelling video. This video was made like 10 years ago already and made better and its called Enrique Inglesias's Hero. When a video starring Enrique Inglesias [who I retroactively like], Jennifer Love Hewitt and Mickey Rourke is better than your video, you may have a problem. The problem is Leona tries to be classy but you can't do the bank-robbing-Bonnie-and-Clyde music video unless you're willing to make a video with Mickey Rourke. Who is now a Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee, so you know, take that Leona.

Kung Pow Chicken Lasagna:

The start of the Mickey Rourke comeback:

Crazy Barack Shit.

Like, I said I love me some Barack but seriously, calm the fuck down America. A Barack Chia Pet? Unnecessary! Even more unnecessary? Barack condoms!!!
I still kind of want one though. The Chia Pet. Not the condoms.
Also, who knew CNN could make pot head jokes?!

Barack is an evil genius.

So today I got an email from Barack Obama - well not from him I am sure, but whatever - telling me that if I donated $35 or more I can get a limited edition four year calendar featuring pictures of Barack and his family on the campaign trail.

Damnitt Barack! You must know that there are people out there like me who find you adorable and would want 12x4 months of pictures of you! And that you can exploit us to give you money even after you have been elected president! Genius!

Too bad this is a RECESSION and I have no money and I need a new job ASAP, so sadly I don't have $35 to waste on a calendar. Seriously, if I bought this calendar it would be akin to me buying a N*Sync calendar circa 8th grade and 1998. And yes, we all know I am buying this calendar, because really Barack what do you still need donations for? To produce your weekly YouTube vlogs? [They are kind of eloquent and awesome, but still] To pay Shakira for appearing at your ingauration? To start up the Big 3's bailout fund?

Oh hey! There is an option for poor people like me! If you donate $25 you still get a WINTER HAT. Which you will need, since donating only $25 means you are probably a poor graduate student who tries to not use the heat in their apartment whenever they can because it you know, costs money.

And awesomely, the email ends with this:If you order by December 15th, delivery is guaranteed before December 25th.

I know I will be asking for some change under my Christmas tree come December 25th!

What the world needs now is Barack Obama's big ears.

Now that the election is over and I can stop defending my voting choices based on purely political reasons, I can come out and say the best thing about this past election is Barack Obama's big ears. [Also, CNN's wacky Princess Leia style holograms and giant touch screen state puzzle thing were fun!!!]

A list of all that is adorable in this world:

  1. Baby ducks.
  2. Puppies.
  3. Barack Obama's big ears.
  4. Barack Obama holding the puppy he will eventually buy his daughters. [yes, this has not happened yet, but I am sure it will be adorable]
Note, not all big ears are adorable - just Barack's are. George W. Bush has big ears, but they just make him look like a goof. If I had big ears they would probably look like fish fins.

Basically what I am trying to say is that I have a huge crush on Barack Obama. Whatevs. It will probably only last until January 20th, because then he will actually have to start doing stuff. Right now all he does is post YouTube videos where he paraphrases Langston Hughes and looks cute talking to 60 Minutes about the forthcoming puppy.

So yeah, I'll swoon on Inuaguration Day. And then I'll swoon when the puppy pictures are released.

And then I'll stop.
Maybe.
